Coleen Travers, LMSW, ACSW
Clinical Social Worker
Licensed Master of Social Work (State of Michigan)
Populations
Adults, women, men, gays/lesbians, seniors, groups.
Specialty Areas
I provide individual and group therapy services to adults. I have received extensive training in EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing). This is a type of therapy, which when combined with ways of activating the right and left side of the brain, helps to process traumas (minor, medium, and major) that have been "stuck" and facilitates healing. This therapy also works very well in "bumping out" self-defeating beliefs and replacing them with self-enhancing and positive beliefs. I am skilled in public speaking, and I enjoy providing workshops, seminars, and retreats.
I work with people on the issues of co-dependency, adult children of alcoholics/addicts, career issues, depression, domestic violence, eating disorders, infertility, medical stress/ chronic disease, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), dental trauma, excessive worrying, depression, adults with a history of sexual/physical abuse, alcohol/drugs misuse, abuse and dependence, as well as spirituality and sexuality issues.
Education
Master of Social Work, with SPADA Certificate (Specialty Program in the Treatment of Alcohol and Drug Abuse), Western Michigan University, 1988.
Background/Experience
In professional practice since 1988.
Professional Interests/Specialties
In my work, it is essential to me that my clients are able to increase their sense of choice and feel empowered to become their "best self", as well as create a sense of personal fulfillment. To help people meet their goals, I utilize behavioral techniques, role play, guided imagery, cognitive/self-talk exercises, and experiential methods. I have a special interest in working with people who have lived through trauma, domestic violence, eating disorders and familial alcoholism/addiction.
